Dorothy Elizabeth Brown passed away on Saturday morning, December 8, 2012, at Linden Hall, where she has resided since June. She was 86 years old.

Born in Red Lion Row, she was the daughter of the late John M. Johnson and the late Blanche Johnson (nee. Ironsides). The family later moved to Hamorton, where she resided until her marriage to Robert E. Brown in 1953.

Dorothy attended Kennett High School and Beacom College in Wilmington. She began her working career at the Atlas Powder Co. and later as a secretary for the New Bolton Center. Her true passion lay in her desire to paint, studying under Frank E. Schoonover and Edward Grant at the Delaware Art Center. In May of 1947, she began working with Carolyn Wyeth at her studio in Chadds Ford. Most of Dot’s works were done in oil but she enjoyed working with charcoal and on occasion water color. She was devoted to realism and once wrote that she had no desire to express herself in any other way. Her talent on her loom allowed her to weave and sew her own clothing and various household sundries. She designed and produced handmade jewelry and was proficient pianist. Her love of reading and books took her and her husband into in Philadelphia to explore book shops creating a large personal library of history, gardening, cooking, sewing and anything related to Bayard Taylor. She enjoyed watching TV and was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. She was a member of the Lesserton Garden Club, The Order of Eastern Star and was active in the local Historical Society.

She was the beloved wife of the late Robert E. Brown; mother of James E. Brown and his wife Beth of Pequea, Pennsylvania; grandmother of Evan Brown and Parker Brown; sister of the late Joseph Johnson; sister-in-law of Dorothy Herrman of Marlboro Village, Elsie Johnson of Kennett Square and Raymond Brown and his wife Bobbie of Williamsburg, Virginia.
